"Flying" to my destiny October 11, 2007

So I just returned from a trip to Colorado, where I went to attend the wedding of my former boss, Charlie. Great wedding, actually. Classy, but very down-to-earth. At the reception, Christy, the bride, did a full-out lip-synch performance of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back”. Now that’s my kinda chick!

While I was really overjoyed to have been invited, I must confess that I had an ulterior motive for wanting to go: I’ve long been interested in visiting Colorado, which is well-known as one of the spiritual/mystical centers on the earth. Since I’m into Reiki and all that other stuff, places like Colorado with a strong shamanic/energetic connection have always been fascinating to me.

So off I went, fully expecting to have a mystical experience of some kind. I’m not sure that I did. I felt light-headed and short-of-breath, but I think that was more due to altitude sickness than anything else. (Smile.) I was also convinced that I would meet my animal totem. So I kept looking and looking. I mean, this is Colorado, right? I’m looking for a bear, meadowlark, even a squirrel.

But all I got was flies.

Yup. You read right. Flies. Common or garden houseflies.

It seemed like anywhere I went – any restaurant, any store – there were a few really annoying, disgusting, irritating flies buzzing around and getting all over everything. And the weirdest thing was that they seemed to only land on my table, or whizz around whatever I was looking at. It was truly bizarre.

So after I got over my pissosity (“Is this it??!!” I said to the Universe, not very respectfully. “A frikin’ fly? I am way too cute to have a fly as my totem.”) I decided to look into it. A couple of clicks on Google and here’s what I found on a site called StarStuffs:

“The Fly teaches the ability to greatly multiply prosperity, endeavors and ventures at enormous rates. He shows how to be quick to act and respond to achieve results. Fly aids in demonstrating the power of keen eyesight along with expanding awareness in many directions.”

Hmmm…not bad. I’m all for multiplying prosperity and achieving results. So I have gotten over myself and adopted the fly as my totem. I have a lot in the works right now, including looking for a publisher for my book, so anything that helps me move in the right direction and act decisively is good with me.

Does it really mean anything? Who knows. But it has definitely made me re-focus on my dreams and goals, and given me faith that I am achieving them.

Maybe it’s all a sign that I am flying to my destiny.

Here’s an excerpt of a song that I wrote on that subject a couple of years ago:

Destiny

To be the best I can ever be
All I want to do is live my destiny
Don’t wanna live vicariously
All I wanna get is what is meant for me
The future’s brighter than the past
The die’s not cast flying at half-mast
The best is yet to come they say
And every day
I’m closer to my destiny
