Practical Matters – Writing a Will

This year I will be turning 40–I mean 25 . I can hardly believe it! Anyway, this fact, combined with some recent events in my life have really made me wake up and become more practical. I must, must, must get my house in order.

So no poetry today. No. Today is all about practical matters, specifically writing a will.

One never likes to admit that one is mortal or think about “the end”, but trust me, one day it is coming, and it is best for your family and loved ones that survive you if you are prepared.

If you have significant assets, you might be better off consulting a lawyer to take care of this vital matter, but many of us can simply create our final will and testament online. There is a plethora of sites, such as LegacyWriter.com, LegalZoom.com and SuzeOrman.com.

Once you decide which option suits you best, here are the steps you have to take to set up your DIY will:

Choose your heirs. These are the people to whom you will leave your property and assets. Also think of alternates in case your first choice does not survive you.

Choose your witnesses. You usually need two. You will need to sign the will in their presence. They will need to sign it as well.

Choose your executor. This is the person who will ensure that your final wishes are carried out, so make sure that it is someone that you fully trust.

Sign and safeguard. Sign your will to make sure that it is legal and binding, and then make several copies. Most importantly, let those close to you know where you keep it, and make sure that that place is accessible by them (i.e., no safe deposit boxes).
